Drawing from 20 years of recipe development and my time co-founding a spice company, here’s what makes this recipe worth making exactly as written.
- Use silver (blanco) tequila, not aged. Gold or reposado tequila brings oak and vanilla notes that compete with the Kahlua. Silver keeps it clean and bright.
- Chill your cola before mixing. Pouring warm soda over ice waters it down faster and kills the carbonation. Cold cola straight from the fridge gives you better bubbles and better flavor.
- Pour the cola last and gently. Add the Kahlua and tequila to your ice-filled glass first, then tilt the glass slightly and pour the cola slowly down the side to preserve the fizz.
- Don’t skip the garnish. A lime wedge squeezed in right before drinking adds a citrus pop that makes the whole thing taste more intentional. An orange twist works beautifully too.
- This recipe scales perfectly. The 1:1 ratio of Kahlua to tequila is easy to double or triple for a pitcher-style situation. Just top off individual glasses with cola to order so it stays fizzy.

- Add cream of coconut: A tablespoon of cream of coconut gives this a tropical spin that’s surprisingly good. Think of it as a coffee-coconut cocktail situation.
- Mocktail version: Use a coffee-flavored syrup (like Torani) in place of the Kahlua and skip the tequila. Top with cola and a squeeze of lime. Still delicious, fully zero-proof.
How to Store & Make-Ahead Tips
- This cocktail is best made fresh. It doesn’t store well once the cola is added since the carbonation goes flat quickly. Mix individual drinks to order.
- Pre-batch the base: You can mix equal parts Kahlua and tequila in a jar or bottle ahead of time and refrigerate it. When you’re ready to serve, just pour over ice and top with cola.
- Keep your Kahlua refrigerated after opening. It doesn’t require refrigeration, but keeping it cold means it’s always ready to go and helps preserve flavor over time.
- Use a sealed container for the Kahlua-tequila base. If you’ve pre-batched it, it will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks with no issues.
- Leftover cola? Transfer it to a sealed bottle and refrigerate immediately to preserve carbonation. Use within 24-48 hours for best results.

Classic Coca-Cola is the gold standard here because its caramel and vanilla notes complement Kahlua so well. That said, Cherry Coke, Mexican Coke (made with cane sugar), and even Pepsi all work. Diet colas are a solid lower-sugar option. Avoid flavored craft sodas with strong competing flavors like ginger or citrus.
A highball glass is ideal since the tall, narrow shape keeps the carbonation in longer and leaves plenty of room for ice, the drink, and a garnish. A Collins glass works the same way. In a pinch, any large glass with ice does the job.
You can pre-batch the Kahlua and tequila base and keep it refrigerated. When guests arrive, set out the base, ice, and chilled cola so people can mix their own drinks to order. This keeps the carbonation intact and gives everyone a freshly made cocktail experience without you playing bartender all night.
