Food for Thought

Updated On: Oct 03, 2023
Does this picture not say a thousand words?  p.s. it’s not me

Both my husband and I had our physicals in the past week.  The verdict?  Both of us need to lose weight!  What’s more, the Hubs was diagnosed with above normal blood pressure and a heart murmur, which has turned out to be a slightly leaky valve.  He’s totally fine, other than he needs to eat better and get some exercise in.  Anyway, why am I tell you all of this?  Not to scare you, but rather to get your help.

I love to cook.  I love this blog.  I love food.  You’re following right?

Let’s play a little Sesame Street game.  What two things don’t go with the other.

Ready?

Here we go.

Dieting…..exercise…..Rolo filled Blondie brownies.

If you guessed the brownies then you win what’s behind door #2!!!!  A lifetime supply of Rice Cakes!!!

So far, my blog has been about indulgences like buttery muffins and the aforementioned Rolo filled brownies, but going forward I’m going to shift things up.  In an effort to get the Hubs and I back on track with our health, I will be forgoing the Rolo Brownies for more healthful choices.  If you know me, you know that I love great “taste”, so nothing that I will post here will be tasteless, I promise you that.  I believe that it’s possible to have healthy food that doesn’t taste like you’re eating a cardboard box.

Moving on.

So here’s where you come in.  I need you to help keep me accountable.  I will admit to you now that I am as weak as they come.  Insert hockey game Saturday night where I downed 8 mini donuts in 2.8 seconds.  Ok, maybe not that fast, but woosh, they were gone.  The Hubs and I have been on 7,294,156 diets.  We’ve “committed” to each other twice as many times that we’d exercise daily.  Ya, not so successful.  We sabotage each other so we can go snarf down baskets of tortilla chips at the local Mexican restaurant.  Anyway, you see the giant horrible picture of just how weak we are.  Here’s where YOU come in.  If you see me shifting gears here on the blog and there’s a stick of butter or heavy cream, would you PLEASE call me to the carpet?  It’s the least you can do to keep us from 7,294,157 failures.

Seriously, I hope that you enjoy this new journey with the Hubs and I.  We are both ready to make the change and are going to hit this hard!  Oh, one more thing.  Whenever possible I will give you the calories and fat of the recipe.  I hope that you find that helpful.  Also, I am human and do plan to approach this new eating journey in a humane way which will include the occasional treats.  “Occasional” being the operative word.

So that’s it.  This is my Monday confession to you all.  The new healthful culinary adventure starts today.  Thanks for reading and now I need to go gnaw on a celery stick.

  2. My best “they work for me” tips: I only bake when I know I’m going to visit clients or go to a party. Then I can bring the whole batch and LEAVE IT! I still get to have one (or two) but the whole plateful isn’t staring at me from the kitchen counter every night. Also, even if its just a walk around the block after dinner I try to do SOMETHING every single day. No one every regrets working out, they only regret NOT working out! Good Luck!

  3. We are in the same boat, with me just wanting to shed the unwanted bulge that accumulated around my middle all of a sudden, without me changing the eating habits, and husband needing to shed about 30. I eat very little, desserts are not my weak spot, but I do enjoy a couple of glasses of wine per day.
I applaud your decision. Grandmothers are usually right:)

That’s a great point “Anonymous”. I’m thinking that will be our method of attack. Moderation mixed with better choices and the occasional dessert. My grandmother is 92 and swears by moderation. She sometimes eats like a bird and other times she just eats what she wants. She’s in amazing health and looks and feels much younger than 92! Thanks for your comment. I appreciate it. 🙂

Middle of the road is best….I walk three miles everyday even in the snow….lots of snow….I live close to Canada. I eat a small breakfast, a small lunch, a regular dinner of my choice and one dessert (with in reason) I am 66 and feel much younger.

I hear ya Sherry. I graze all day long. That’s my worst habit. The plan though is to have some good grazing items around like almonds and rice cakes. Sorry kids – no more Cheezits! 🙂 Not that they ever got very many of them. Anyway, thanks for the applause! I’m looking forward to it and sharing with you all.

  7. I’m convinced – one of the reasons we food lovers get married is to have someone who will help us sabotage our diets!!!! We love food, it’s generally the center of most activities we do.
We had our physicals in Dec. & January, we’re doing fine – cholesterol, BP, everything fine. She didn’t even give me flack when I told her I was up a few lbs. HOWEVER, I’m hard enough on myself that those stupid 20 or so lbs really bother me! Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to keep trying to lose them (AND keep them off – for my money, THAT’s the hard part!), but I’m not going to let the fact that they’re NOT gone yet keep me from doing what I want. That’s one of my things – “I don’t want to go, I won’t be able to wear what I want because I feel fat…” etc.
I applaud your “new attitude” to cook healthier but delicious food – most of the time it just takes a little tweak here & there to make a big difference & once you get used to eating “cleaner,” you don’t miss the other stuff.
Now, if I can just stop the snacking and watch the hubs’ portion control!

@Monica – 3 words. I LOVE YOU! 🙂 I know you will keep me on track and kick my butt if you see me being bad. I’m glad you’ll also be my cheerleader! You’re the best. I mean it.

Oh Heather! I am so EXCITED!!! Okay, sorry about the bad health update, but I am thrilled that you will be adding healthy recipes! I LOVE love love your recipes but WW is making it tough to try things.

And it is almost walking weather… 🙂

Look forward to more delicious recipes from my most favorite blogger!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Annapet. I’m trying to be ready to get on the choo-choo but am not looking forward to less desserts. 🙂 I will see what I can do to make some healthful ones. 1200 is about where I will be too. You can do it girl!! 🙂 Happy Monday and thanks for the comment.

  11. Heather, what’s with us adults (just for reference) and March physicals? I did the same and my doctor gave me a number: 1,200 calories per day. I liked her BEFORE.

I am VERY MUCH cheering you on! I do need to take that journey as well though not ready to get on the cho-choo train.
